README

Bible Verse Memorizer – Anki add-on

Turns a Bible verse or passage into a set of cards for memorizing it. You only enter the reference and the text; the add-on creates the cards.

Card Front Back
First Letters reference + 16 f g s l t w, full text
Line 1, 2, 3… (line before and after) reference + previous line + [...] + next line the missing line highlighted
Recall Text reference + [...] full text
Recall Reference [...] + text reference

The first line only shows the line after it, the last line only the line before it. A text with a single line gets no line cards.

Installation

Requires Anki 2.1.55 or newer (tested with 25.02.7 and 26.09.2).

  • From a file: scripts/build.sh creates dist/bible_verse_memorizer.ankiaddon; double-click it, or use Tools β†’ Add-ons β†’ Install from file….
  • Development version (changes in this folder are picked up after a restart):
    scripts/install_dev.sh

Restart Anki. When a profile is opened, the add-on creates the note type Bible Verse (only if it does not exist yet).

Usage

  1. Add β†’ choose the note type Bible Verse.
  2. Enter the Reference (e.g. John 3:16) and paste the Text. Want the translation on the card? Put it in the reference: John 3:16 (NIV).
  3. Click Add.

How lines are determined

  • If you added line breaks yourself (Enter), every line becomes a card line.
  • If you paste one running text, it is split after , ; : . ! ? (only when followed by a space, so 12:00 and 3,5 stay intact).
  • Verse numbers are kept; 16 or 16For copied from websites becomes 16 For. Ordinals such as 3rd stay intact. Passages with several verses work.
  • At most 30 line cards per note; longer passages are merged into line 30 (you get a message). Consider splitting such passages.

Editing – when you change the text later, the cards are updated as soon as you leave the field. If the text gets shorter, surplus line cards are left empty; clean them up with Tools β†’ Bible Verse Memorizer: Update All Verses (undo with Edit β†’ Undo). That menu action is also useful after editing on your phone, where add-ons do not run.

The fields Formatted, FirstLetters and Line1–30 are filled in by the add-on and hidden in the editor. Manual changes to them are overwritten.

Studying on mobile works as usual (AnkiMobile/AnkiDroid): all card content is stored in the note. Add and edit verses on the desktop.

  • pytest tests the text logic and – with the real anki package – the note type and the rendering of every card. Run it against newer Anki versions too, e.g. with a Python 3.13 venv and anki==26.9.2.
  • scripts/smoke_test.sh starts the real Anki app with a throwaway base folder (your own profiles are not touched), loads the add-on from a numeric folder name like AnkiWeb does, walks through adding, editing, hiding fields and the menu action, and prints the result. Close Anki first.
  • When templates or CSS change, bump TEMPLATE_VERSION in note_type.py so existing users receive them; bump human_version in manifest.json for releases.
  • Design notes: docs/superpowers/specs/.
