Description

I really liked this add on called Voxki - Text-to-Speech with Pronunciation Dictionary found here: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1810680328 Limitations of other Mobile TTS options: Voxki had text to speech with better pronunciation options/list, but mobile is not currently supported. The Anking Add on to customize their note types also had a feature with Text to Speech, but needed to the user to use their desktop to change this on/off, and did not have much flexibility other than reading speed. They do this by placing custom JS into their card types. It's been a while, but I do remember seeing options that used AI/recorded mp3 files to make this happen. This may sound more natural, but makes the collection huge. The only other option I am aware of for Mobile TTS is a bit cumbersome to turn on/off, by going into your devices' accessibility settings, using a screen reader. Not very customizable. Difficult to turn on and off, and not worth the time to toggle on/off, especially if you were only using it for a few minutes. Mobile TTS advantages: Mobile TTS takes the Voxki's customizability options and pronunciation while allowing for toggling on/off on mobile, and changing the settings directly IpadOS and IOS without need for desktop. (Possibly Android, though I have no ability to test). Nice if you want to go for a walk with an Anki Remote in your hand and your phone in a pocket and have it read to you. It also uses the same pronunciation list as Voxki TTS if you have it installed so you don't need to maintain separate pronunciation lists, though it is not required. Mobile TTS takes the Anking's approach to TTS by adding JS/UserActions on the back of the card types to allow this to work. Pronunciation is done in real time on device. Usage Guide: Download on MacOS or Windows and restart Anki. Select 'Tools' in the Top bar, then 'Install/Update Mobile TTS on selected note types. This will add Javascript embedded in each card's card type that allows it to run on mobile. It also creates a back up of your cards' templates as well. After this, sync your collection, and it will work on mobile. Default Config can be set on desktop. On Desktop, go to the add ons page with 'Tools' >> Add ons. Select 'Mobile TTS', then 'Configure'. Use this to set your default settings, then hit 'save', which will add this onto the selected note type(s), and sync the collection. It will also set the action to open the Mobile-version of the settings (e.g. 'UserAction1' or 'UserAction2, etc.) On IpadOs or IOS we have three options to view/change settings: Option 1: In the toolbar: Settings >> Review >> Top Bar, then make sure 'Show Top Bar' is Checked, then tap one of the buttons you aren't using, like Button5, and assign that to the appropriate UserAction. (ex. if you set opening the menu in step 3 to UserAction3, select user action 3, or if you want to just toggle it on/off, Assign another user action button here.). Go back to the main deck screen. When you review, press the appropriate button. Option 2: In the bottom right, there is a gear of options. Scroll to the bottom. Press and hold the appropriate user action to pin that to the top (if desired). Option 3: If using enough a game controller (e.g. 8BitDo Micro in 'S' mode), set a button to the appropriate user action. Option 4: If using a keyboard or game controller set up as a keyboard (e.g. 8BitDo Micro in 'k' mode), use the appropriate software to bind that hotkey to the remote. Mobile useraction/hotkeys include: opening the menu, toggling TTS off/on, and repeating the sound. The menu will appear. It defaults to what you saved on desktop. Feel free to change speed, test voices (default voice on IOS/IPadOS is my favorite), etc. to your liking. Hit 'Save' to save settings. Some settings require the collection to be synced before seeing during review.
