README

4x6 Flashcard Printer

This is a lightweight Anki add-on for printing flashcards onto 4x6 or 6x4 index cards. It renders the front and back of each card on consecutive pages as a PDF, then opens the final print-ready file in your system viewer.

Features

  • Prints the currently selected cards in Browse when any are highlighted.
  • Falls back to the selected deck and its subdecks when no cards are selected.
  • Produces a PDF in Documents/Anki 4x6 Printouts.
  • Uses Anki's bundled web engine, so there is no extra Python dependency to install.
  • Sanitizes card HTML before export to reduce script and unsafe URL injection risk.

Installation

From Github

  1. Download or clone this repository.
  2. In Anki, open Tools -> Add-ons and click View Files.
  3. Copy the anki4x6flashcards folder into the addons21 directory that opens.
  4. Restart Anki.
  5. Choose Tools -> Print 4x6 Flashcards....

From Ankiweb

  1. Visit https://ankiweb.net/shared/addons
  2. Search for Anki 4x6 Printouts
  3. Copy the add-on code
  4. In Anki, open Tools -> Add-ons, click Get Add-ons, and paste in the code

Usage

  • If you have cards selected in the Browse window, the add-on prints those cards.
  • If no cards are selected, it prints the current deck and, by default, any child decks.
  • The generated PDF is saved to Documents/Anki 4x6 Printouts and opened automatically.

Printing settings

For best results:

  • Use Actual Size / 100% in the print dialog.
  • For landscape cards (6 x 4), select duplex flip on short edge.
  • For portrait cards (4 x 6), select duplex flip on long edge.

Keep Anki open until the PDF has finished rendering so image media can load through Anki's local media server.

Configuration

The add-on exposes a few simple settings in the Anki add-on config:

  • orientation: landscape or portrait
  • includeSubdecks: true or false
  • horizontalOffsetInches: fine horizontal calibration
  • verticalOffsetInches: fine vertical calibration

These values are intended for small printer alignment corrections.

Known limitations

  • Card templates with unusual answer separators may need a small compatibility tweak.
  • The add-on is designed for print output, not for editing card content in the browser.
  • It expects a normal Anki deck/card setup and a printer that can handle the selected page size.

Development and release notes

This project is intended to be shareable with the Anki community. It keeps the feature set conservative, documents the limits clearly, and focuses on reliability before adding more complexity.
