Later Button: Study a Card Later Today Without Rating It

Later: push a card to the end of today's queue, without rating it. Ever get to a card you're not ready to learn yet, and press Again just to get it out of the way? That's a fake answer. FSRS treats it as a real failure: the card's difficulty jumps, and every future interval for it grows more slowly. Press Again twice while dodging a card and difficulty goes from about 6.3 to 8.6 out of 10. The card is now marked "hard" forever, just because you weren't ready for it yet. Later gives you an honest way to say "not now." It adds a fifth answer button that parks the card and brings it back at the end of today's queue. Nothing is logged, so FSRS never sees a rating. How it works A fifth answer button. After you reveal the answer, Later sits next to Again / Hard / Good / Easy and looks the same. Shortcut: L (configurable). It knows what kind of card it is. A new card , or a new card still in its learning steps (your "Again pile"), comes back after your other new cards and learning steps. A review , or a lapsed review in relearning, comes back after your other reviews, even if new cards are still waiting. An estimate above the button, where the intervals normally go, e.g. ~145 cards , so you know roughly when you'll see it again. No rating, no FSRS impact. Later uses Anki's own bury, so no review is logged, and the card's stability, difficulty and due date stay exactly as they were. It stays at the end. Unsuspend or add more cards mid-session and your Later cards still wait behind them. It never waits on a timer. If everything else left is a learning step due in 25 minutes, your Later cards come back now instead of leaving you on the "come back later" screen. Undo works. One Undo reverts a Later press, or an answer together with anything it released. You can always see what's parked A fourth, coloured number in the review counter: new + learn + review + later . Hover over it for an estimate. A Later row on the deck overview screen. A small "3 later" pill next to decks in the deck list. It also works with themes such as Onigiri. A "Later card" tag on a card when it comes back, so you recognise it. In the Browser, search is:buried-manually . Good to know Later cards are for today only . Anything still parked is released by Anki at the next day's rollover. Later cards are hidden from Anki's due counts while parked, so other add-ons' "time left" estimates won't include them. If your deck has a new-card daily limit smaller than the number of new cards available, a parked new card may not return until tomorrow once that limit is reached. With a high limit it always comes back. Desktop only. AnkiMobile and AnkiDroid don't run add-ons, but parked cards simply show up there as buried. Written for the v3 scheduler, and tested with FSRS on Anki 25.09. Settings (Tools → Add-ons → Later → Config) shortcut : the key for Later (default l ). color : the colour of the hover fill, count, tag and pill (default purple #9b7ede ). Tip: the most honest workflow is to press Later the first time you see a new card you're not ready for, before pressing Again. It stays a plain new card, and FSRS only records a rating when you actually try to learn it.
